How to Effectively Spot Clean Carpet?
This section will explain how to deal with the most common exercise in carpet cleaning other than vacuuming - spot cleaning. Red wine, coloured soft drinks, food and even cosmetics items are often accidentally spilt onto the floor. And while the affected area may only be small, even a small colour variation is unfortunately easily detectable on light coloured carpets. It is recommended that remedial action be taken immediately after the spillage occurs to minimise the damage. Below is the procedure to follow:
- Soak up excess liquid and/or dirt from the surface of the carpet.
- Try to identify the type of stain, through sight, touch and smell(!) in order to select the most suitable cleaning agent.
- Before applying the spotting agent to the affected area, always pretest the spotter on an inconspicuous area of your carpet to determine if the agent will produce any adverse effects.
- Apply spotter with a clean white cloth and gently dab the stain working from the outside towards the centre.
- For deeper stains, apply spotter directly to the carpet WITHOUT initially soaking the carpet.
- Rinse the area well after the stain has been removed.
- For tough stains, it may be necessary to repeat steps 5 and 6.
- Once you are satisfied with the area, comb the carpet pile to restore its original shape.
Additional Advice
Prespraying - Prespraying a stain with undiluted detergent and then extracting with water is more effective than direct injection (with diluted detergent in tank). Prespraying allows the detergent more time to penetrate stains and thus offers better results.
Spots and stains - Most heavily soiled areas are readily cleaned by applying carpet detergent at a stronger concentration (1:5 to 1:10 with water). The Agar Carpet Spotter B is a stain remover solvent suitable for removing adhesive tape marks, cosmetics (ie. lipstick, mascara, nail polish, foundation) stains, and some ink stains.
Acidic rinse - A very useful technique that is also multi-purpose: removal of detergent residues, softening the feel of fibres, prevention of browning problems and stabilisation of dye colours.
Problematic odours - The Agar Freshaire Odour Neutraliser is a strong deodoriser with a unique 4 way action to remove difficult odours. It is also versatile and is ideal for treating hard surfaces, carpets, clothing, furnishings, upholstery and can be used anywhere from nursing homes to household bathrooms.
Brown stains - Agar Browning Treatment is a powerful solution for removing incidents of browning caused by over-wetting or flooding of carpets and upholstery. It is also ideal for treating watermarks and brown or yellow animal stains.
