Our experts have answered some of your most frequently asked questions about barrel vacuums, to help you decide if they could be the right cleaning solution for you.

What is a barrel vacuum?

Barrel vacuums are your classic vacuum, the type that your parents and even grandparents love. And with some modern features, they’re still a great option today! Available in bagged or bagless options, these powerful vacuums are corded, meaning they run on mains power electricity, and are a great choice for deep cleaning all over the home.

What’s the difference between bagged and bagless vacuums?

Bagged or bagless refers to how dust and debris is stored in the vacuum.

With a bagged vacuum, once full, you simply remove the disposable dust bag and place it in the bin — no mess to worry about.

Bagless vacuums feature a removable dust compartment which, when full, requires you to open, empty, and return it to the vacuum.

What is better bagged or bagless?

This depends on what you want from your vacuum. Bagged vacuums are great for people with allergies, as you can dispose of dust and debris without being exposed to any of the dust.

On the other hand, a bagless vacuum has fewer ongoing costs, as there are no bags to buy, and it’s much easier to retrieve any Lego pieces or lost jewellery you accidentally suck up!

Does higher wattage mean more suction?

Wattage is a measurement of electricity consumption but is not a great indicator of suction, or more importantly, how well the vacuum will clean.

Whether it be motor design, smart tech or other clever design features, there are plenty of other factors that can impact the suction and cleaning effectiveness of your vacuum.

Is a barrel good for cleaning carpets?

The powerful suction and unlimited running time of a barrel vacuum are perfect for cleaning deep into carpets. Couple it with a Powerhead — which creates vibrations, loosening embedded dirt from carpets & rugs — and you may get even better results!

Is a barrel more powerful than a cordless machine?

While not necessarily true for every barrel or every cordless vacuum, barrels do tend to prioritise power and often have stronger suction than cordless vacuums. That’s not to say a cordless vacuum isn’t powerful or not a great option — it’s just that they focus on other benefits and innovative ways of cleaning more so than just suction power.

Is a barrel more suited to a large home?

Barrels are a great option for a large home. They typically have larger capacity and require less emptying, and because they are corded you don’t have to worry about battery life — which can be an issue in larger homes.

The larger vacuum heads also clean faster while the powerful suction can be a bonus when cleaning up after messy kids and pets.
